About the book

Most experience design optimizes for the wrong layer. We measure engagement, dwell time, and satisfaction, and almost never measure whether anything changed. Did the visitor leave different than they walked in? Will they remember it in a year? Is the experience still working on them a week later?

The Tertiary Effect is a working method for transformation design. It introduces the Tertiary Method™. Transformation isn't something you deliver to an audience or perform at them. It's something a visitor does for themselves when the conditions are right. The experiences that genuinely change people don't sell self-improvement and don't depend on a story landing on cue. Visitors who arrive without a named aspiration still leave with a change they own. Those experiences define the conditions for an honest meeting with subject matter worth engaging and tend them, then hand the discovery to the visitor, pointed back at their own world.

That difference is becoming decisive. As the tools to manufacture feeling get cheaper, a produced emotion is easy to make and easy to distrust. What stays rare is a change the visitor reaches on their own.

It's also where the business case lives. A change the visitor owns is the one they carry out the door and tell someone about. That's what earns the return visit, the word of mouth, and the community that grows around what you made. Most operators chase that community as captured content, the photos and posts visitors upload. The drive behind that was never the content. It was the advocacy and belonging that bring a visitor back and bring their friends along. An owned story delivers that, and it skips the legal minefield of hosting visitor media and the on-rails experience built to engineer a shareable moment by trading real agency for a photogenic one. The commercial numbers everyone already tracks, return rate, word of mouth, per-visit spend, move because the visitor's inner experience moved first.

Who it's for

  • Museums and cultural institutions: turn a mission you believe in into change you can measure and defend to boards and funders, with integrity built into the design.
  • Theme parks and themed entertainment: turn audiences into authors and advocates so connection to your world deepens with every visit, long after opening day.
  • Brand and experiential work: build real advocacy and community instead of chasing captured content, without the legal and operational cost that comes with it.
  • Immersive and location-based experiences: design ephemeral spaces that genuinely open people, where a discovery the visitor owns is the rare thing spectacle can't fake.

We can do better than satisfaction.
